TRANSITIONERS

What made you want to transition? My stylist burned my scalp all the way around the perimeter of my head. He took a phone call while putting on my relaxer. When I told him that I was still burning after he finished rinsing, he insisted he’d rinsed my relaxer. I insisted he didn’t and we went back and forth. I was still at the shampoo bowl and he wouldn’t even appease his long term client by just rinsing again. Two days later I had scalp burns around my hairline, nape, ears, and in my crown.

I ended up self-relaxing one more time but it didn’t take. After that I was done with relaxers. My hair wasn’t breaking or anything, I just was “ready”. No other word to describe it.

How long have you been transitioning? 5 months exactly

Do you plan on doing a Big Chop? Yes, very soon.

How often do you straighten your hair? My hair loves heat. I get less breakage and my hair is silky and swanging for a week. But, I don’t want to lose my curl pattern so I’ve taken it down a notch. I use heat on special occasions.

What Products do you use to style? Sally GVP PM Skinny Serum and Hydrotherma Naturals Daily Moisturizing Growth Lotion are my favs. I throw some Fantasia gel on my edges when I airdry.

What Products do you use to wash? Prepoo: Oil or cheapie condish Shampoo: Creme of Nature (old red label)

What products do you use to condition? Protein: APhogee 2 Minute Reconstructor DC: Hydrotherma Naturals Moisture Boost Conditioner/mixed with anything else I’m trying to get rid of Leave in: Sally GVP PM The Conditioner/Hydrotherma Naturals Protein Balance Leave in.

Do you deal with straight hair breaking from the natural curly hair? No, I haven’t had a problem with that up to this point.

How do you Style on a daily basis? If I have blown out/flat ironed or rollerset, I wrap or pincurl my hair for maintenance. I add a tiny bit of Hydrotherma Naturals moisturizer to it and that’s it. My hair retains moisture very well. I use a Denman paddle brush and rarely a boar bristle. I comb with a wide tooth shower comb.

If I air dry, I usually stay in a bun. Since I did my mini chop at 19 weeks post, I don’t air dry.

How do you style it when going out or for big events? Blowdry/flat iron

One tip you would give other transitioners? Practice makes perfect.

What made you want to transition? I grew tired of relaxing and sick of the chemical smell.

How long have you been transitioning? I have been transitioning for 8 months...since November 2009.

Do you plan on doing a Big Chop? I have never considered doing a Big Chop because long hair suits my face better. I plan to trim a little every 2 months...which I have not started.

How often do you straighten your hair? I plan to straighten every two weeks or once a month.

What Products do you use to style? Jojoba or Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide or Chi Silk Infusion, Living Proof No Frizz Straight Styling Cream, Organic Rosewater, Darcy’s Botanicals Peach Kernel Hydrating Milk, and Anita Grant’s Whipped Butter.

What Products do you use to wash? Darcy’s Botanicals New Daily Cleansing Conditioning Cream or Zuresh Full Body Cleanser

What products do you use to condition? Anita Grant Rhassoul or Jessicurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment mixed with coconut and other oils, Kinky Curly Knot Today and Zuresh Leave Me In Conditioner

Do you deal with straight hair breaking from the natural curly hair? No

How do you Style on a daily basis? Depending on the weather/season, I wear ponytails, buns, braid outs, and straight styles.

At night, if needed, I spritz with Organic Rosewater, apply a small amount of Anita Grant’s Whipped Butter to each section or Darcy’s Botanicals Peach Kernel Hydrating Milk, apply Argan or Jojoba oil to my ends, and braid.

For braid outs: At night, I make 8 braids and roll the ends with satin rollers. The next day, I apply oil to my hands, carefully unravel the braids and separate the sections, tie my satin scarf for a few minutes (to decrease volume), remove scarf and style.

For ponytails and buns: At night, I secure my hair with a satin scrunchy, make a few braids and roll the ends. The next day, I unravel the braids, separate/fluff, and wear it loose or make a bun. To secure my bun, I use goody spin pins or a satin scrunchy wrapped around my bun.

Straight Styles: At night, I apply Argan or Jojoba Oil and smooth my hair back. Starting with the ends of my hair, I roll upward to my nape, and tie on my satin scarf. The next day, I remove the scarf and wear my hair down with loose curls or pull my hair up with a bear claw clip.

How do you style it when going out or for big events? Straighten with a Flat Iron.

One tip you would give other transitioners? Keep your tresses moisturized! Drink lots of water, add deep conditioning treatments and steam to your regimen, and don’t forget to seal in moisture with an oil based product.

What made you want to transition?  Just curious of what my natural hair looks like now and I'm really just sick of perming it because I feel like its thinning my hair out.

How long have you been transitioning?  1 year and 2 months

Do you plan on doing a big chop?  I always think about doing it but don't think I would ever be brave enough to...so I usually trim an inch of hair a month to slowly get rid of the perm.

How often do you straighten your hair?  Lately I've been straightening it once a week...but usually I try to only straighten once a month :)

What Products do you use to style?   Infusium 23, Lotta Body & Shine serum if its straight

What products do you use to wash?  Still looking for a good Natural Product...Ive tried Yes To Carrots, Dr. Bronners Soap, Bioinfusion Olive Oil Shampoo, and Cream of Nature

What do you use to condition?  Coconut oil and Olive oil

Do you deal with straight hair breaking off from natural curly hair?  No

How do you style on a daily basis?  I have been wearing it in a bun a lot lately but normally I just do braid outs

How do you style it when going out or for big events?  I straighten it

One tip you would give other transitioners?   Don't panic when you start to see new growth. Most likely that hair is not  a true representation of your hair texture. For me, my hair grows out really puffy but as it gets longer it straightens out into waves. So don't freak out and run to get a perm, just let it grow.

What made you want to transition? I love to be able to just wet my hair and go. Ive also been on a mission for intense hair growth and natural is the best way...no heat or damage just healthy curls, plus it gives a more clean feeling rather than trying to maintain a 2 week press.

How long have you been transitioning? About 8 months

How often do you straighten your hair? Once a month

What Products do you use to style? L.A. Looks curly gel, Pantene curly mousse and pro style gel. ( I put coconut and Jojoba oil on my hair first to moisturize before applying the products) * my personal favorite .

What products do you use to wash? Giovanni Organic all natural ( for all hair types)

What do you use to condition? V05 tea tree therapy

Do you deal with straight hair breaking off from natural curly hair? No

How do you style on a daily basis? I normally just pull my hair back in a ponytail in its natural state

How do you style it when going out or for big events? Every purple moon I'll straighten my hair for an event. If I'm wearing it curly ill pin it back into a cute curly bun and pin a low hump on top of my head.

One tip you would give other transitioners? NO PERMS, CHEMICALS, SILICONE'S, OR SULFATES!!!! Ix nay on the flat ironing frequently...it not only dries out your hair but it kills your poor curls to point of no return!!! Keep your hair moisturized, moisture is very important. Play with your hair and experiment with a bunch of styles until you find one that suits you best in your natural state. Braid outs are always great!!!
