OK guys I know a lot of you health conscious people look at the ingredients in your food but do you look at the ingredients in your hair products, if your answer is NO I would like to challenge you to start doing so!

If you are a curly head like myself it is very important to read what you are actually putting in your hair…one of the main things we deal with is FRIZZY, DRY OR UNDEFINED CURLS!!!! If you are tired of your bushy lifeless hair its time to make some changes!!!

“Curly Girl” a book by Lorraine Massey helped me understand my hair and find my perfect curl!!!! I read this book after recently cutting off all my relaxed hair and going back to my natural curls.

So in short here it is…THROW AWAY YOUR PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN SULFATES AND SILICONES FAST LOL! These products are not meant for people with curly, wavy or kinky hair!!! The sooner you stop using them the sooner you can see your hair beautiful, soft and shiny…probably the way it was when you were a baby lol!

JUST SAY NO TO:SULFATES – most popular ones are sodium lauryl sulfate or laureth sulfate, most products that say sulfate are definitely a NO NO!

SILICONES- any product ending in –cone or –conol (there are more but these are most popular) are a NO NO as well

• SOME CURLY GIRLS GIVE UP SHAMPOO ALL TOGETHER- Lorraine Massey encourages you to use a No-Poo method or a Low-Poo method.

No-Poo Method – is to completely stop using shampoo all together (when you wash your hair use a silicone free conditioner to clean scalp like you would a shampoo)

Low-Poo Method – is to use a shampoo that does not contain the harmful Sulfate ingredients (an organic shampoo that contains no sulfates can be found at whole foods, target, and some drug stores)

If your serious about giving this “Curly Girl” method a try, here is what I did to get started…hopefully it helps you

If you can’t give up shampoo all together get a sulfate free one, I use Avalon Organics Peppermint Revitalizing Shampoo. (See my list of products) NOTE: I only use shampoo when I straighten my hair which is like once a month (if that) because I feel all the conditioner makes my hair somewhat greasy causing it not to flow the way I want it to when I straighten it (could be just in my head but that’s what I think lol)

You will need to get a silicone free conditioner. This conditioner can be used for co-washing (conditioner washing instead of shampoo washing) your hair and as a leave-in. NOTE: it does not have to be a leave-in conditioner to leave it in! I use V05 Moisture Milks Passion Fruit Smoothie and Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut!

Use whatever styling products you prefer just remember to check the ingredients to make sure your styling product doesn't contain silicone's.

The products I use for styling are usually just conditioners or gels
Devachan Arc AnGEL, LaBella Gel, La Looks Gel and KCCC
Suave Naturals, Giovanni Smooth as Silk, and KCNT

AFTER YOU HAVE YOUR “CURLY GIRL” SAFE PRODUCTS YOU CAN BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY! If you want more details on the “Curly Girl” Method by Lorraine Massey go and get the book I got mine at borders but I'm sure you can get it at any bookstore.

Step 1: You will need to wash your hair with a Clarifying Shampoo one last time…so go get one of those old shampoos containing sulfates and wash your hair with it for the last time (feel free to chunk it afterwards )
*NOTE, This step is important to remove all the build up of products and silicone's you currently have in your hair.

Step 2: Condition your hair with a SILICONE FREE conditioner.
• I use V05 Moisture Milks or Suave Naturals (both silicone free and pretty inexpensive)
*NOTE, This will become your daily routine, when you get in the shower to wash your hair you will use this conditioner as your shampoo (no more sulfate shampoos)

Step 3: Detangle your hair with your fingers…yes I said your fingers! If you must use a comb make sure it’s a wide tooth comb with no snags so that it does not pull and break your hair! DO NOT BRUSH YOUR HAIR…THIS IS A BIG NO NO! You don’t want to brush your hair because it will produce frizz, and breakage.
*NOTE, never comb or brush curly hair when it is dry!

Step 4: Rinse hair with cool or cold water. It’s important to rinse with cool or cold water because it makes hair shinier and leaves a bit of conditioner on the hair to protect the ends. After rinsing your hair only use your fingers to style it (don’t use a comb if you used one in the shower to detangle…this will only make it frizzy)

Step 5: Style hair using just your fingers, you may apply the styling product of your choice as long as its silicone free and as hair is drying be sure not to touch it or run your fingers through it anymore (again this will produce frizz).

I hope this helps… please feel free to comment, add to, or ask questions if necessary! Thanks guys,
Curly Girl since 1/17/10
